Man’s best friend deserves to have a lush green lawn to spend their days. What they deserve even more is a pet friendly lawn. The manufacturers of common lawn care products designed with the health and safety of lawn lovers in mind. Majority of lawn care products are safe for your pets, your children, and also yourself.

Here are some common lawn care products and how they work.

Weed Control & Insecticides

Both weed control and insecticides are applied to the lawn via liquid. The liquid application is a concentrated product diluted with water. If you hire a company for this service a technician will show up in personal protective equipment (PPE). Depending on the product, the technician will apply it via a backpack sprayer or some may use a hose attached to their vehicle. While this product is wet it is best to keep off of the lawn unless wearing PPE.

The product doesn’t stay on the grass blades. It is mostly in the thatch layer and will be worked further once the lawn is watered and the product makes its way into the soil. Watering isn’t required before sending your pup out because the product is typically fully dry within an hour. If a heavy treatment is applied on a cool spring day and you aren’t sure if it is dry enough, give it 4 hours tops to be completely dry. That is stretching it in an abundance of caution.

Fertilizer

Soluble Granules (SG) Technology is commonly used in the lawn care industry. All of the essential nutrients are in a coating that dissolves when wet. The granules are so small that they usually fall right into the thatch layer. As soon as water is applied the coating will dissolve which allows the nutrients to go into the soil. Watering is not necessary for safety as the product will not activate until water is applied or it rains.

Aeration

The rules for safety of a liquid aeration are in between other liquid products like weed control and SG fertilizer. The liquid aeration doesn’t have the same chemicals that are meant to kill off weeds or pests. It is actually made to improve soil quality rather than to deter anything. Natural ingredients like humic acid and sea kelp make this product completely safe with no further action required by you. The soil will be conditioned and your family’s toes will be safe, thus making for a pet friendly lawn.

A traditional aeration does not include any products.Plugs are pulled up from the ground to allow air and nutrients to flow which ultimately leads to improved soil quality. We do not recommend this service to pet owners or people who need to be on their lawn shortly after the service. The plugs are unsightly and messy.

Seed

Seeds require a similar aftercare to fertilizer. Watering after seeding is very important. You will need to water heavily for several days following the application. After the first watering the seeds will find their way to the lower thatch layer and soil. Generally

Even though these products are considered safe for pets and people, you should always be aware of what your children or pets are doing in your lawn. They should definitely not be eating anything that is intended for your lawn. If it is ingested, call poison control to get further assistance. Lawn care companies have a common practice of leaving either a door hanger or some note for the homeowner with the products used listed.

Most cases of a pet or child getting sick from lawn care products is because a bag or bottle of something was left in the yard or garage. Lawn care technicians don’t leave any product lying around which greatly reduces the risk. Proper storage of products in your home is also a great way to avoid any accidents.
