In Colorado there is a definite shift in the air when the season switches from summer to fall. The season shift brings many changes, including us here at Erbert Lawns. Although we are a seasonal company there is actually many things that we do to prepare for the winter frost. The nights are getting shorter and colder, but one of the good things about Colorado falls is that the days can still get very warm. This means that the grass is still going to continue to grow. Our crew members know that this time of year the grass is growing more slowly so they do adjust the height if they need to.
Our season ends on Halloween and for the last couple of mows we do mow the grass shorter so that the grass is prepared for the moisture of the winter frosts. Keeping the grass longer right before the snow comes in means that all that moisture would sit on top and can lead to mold. Cutting the grass super short allows all the moisture possible to go into the dirt.
We do also do fall aerations. Pulling up the plugs will allow the lawn some breathing room. This will help maintain the health and growth of the lawn for the rest of the season, but it will also help aid in moisture retention during the winter and ready to grow again when Spring comes back around.
