The seasonal shift from spring to summer is just days away. If you live in or around the Mile High City, you know that our summers can be blistering and dry, 100 degrees fahrenheit and beyond. You will want to be ready for your summer lawn care.

Best Grasses:

Cool season grasses are the best grass to grow in Colorado because our cold winters don’t kill it. Kentucky bluegrass, Perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue are the most commonly used cool season grasses. These grasses go into dormancy when conditions aren’t favorable as long as the root system is healthy. Dormancy always occurs in the winter but it can also happen in the summer if it gets too hot for too long. When this happens the lawn will wake back up in the fall when temperature becomes tolerable again. This is the natural cycle of this type of grass.

Lawn lovers don’t enjoy their lawns when they are brown. With some tender love and care, it is possible to keep your lawn green all summer.

Spring:

During spring, before the heat of summer rolls in, it is important to address the condition of your soil. Overtime, especially with heavy foot traffic, the ground can become compacted. It is difficult for grass to develop a healthy root system and grow with hard soil. There is a process called aeration that breaks up the compacted soil to make it an ideal environment for grass to thrive. The most common method of aeration is with a machine called an aerator that lifts plugs of soil to allow air, nutrients, and water to flow more deeply. Here at Erbert Lawns we have taken a more sophisticated approach to aeration with our liquid aeration service. Rather than digging into the lawn to break up soil, a liquid aeration soaks deep into the ground to loosen up any compacted soil. Humic acid and sea kelp are natural ingredients within the aeration that promote a healthy ecosystem beneath the soil. That is something that cannot be provided by a traditional aerator aeration.

After Aeration:

Once an aeration has been completed on your lawn you can also overseed. When there are thin areas the roots of the lawn weeds will try to grow. If the roots are thick and healthy weeds won’t be able to grow. Throwing seeds over any bare spots or thin patches will help keep the weeds out and also make your lawn look more full and hearty. Seed should be applied before hot temperatures become more consistent because it needs time to grow as well as a lot of water. If you miss your window to seed in the spring, you can schedule it for fall. Any care and dedication you can give to your lawn in other ways leading up to a fall seeding will only make the seeding process more successful.

Grass in Colorado lawns grows fastest in the spring and fall. During these times mowing will need to be done more frequently to prevent overgrowth. Once summer hits the grass doesn’t grow as quickly due to drought and heat stress. If you notice your lawn is struggling (turning yellow, looking dry) skip a week with the mowing to give it a chance to catch up.

Revive:

Another service we offer that can help bring out the best in your lawn is our Revive treatment. Revive is a soil conditioner. It aids in battling heat/drought stress by increasing water retention in the soil and encouraging roots to grow deeper. An application of Revive before the temperature heats up and another application during the peak will help you with your summer lawn care.
