…Aerate?
Essential Lawn Care:
Aeration is an essential part of a lawn health care plan. If all you can afford or bring yourself to do is one thing for your yard, we are always going to recommend aeration. It is such an excellent boost to your lawn’s health that we recommend it twice a year for every lawn, even the seemingly healthy ones.
It’s pretty dang hot right now in the Mile High City. This is the time of year where signs of drought or heat stress become evident in lawns.Any lawn lover would want to fix their dead looking patches quickly. The answer must be to aerate right? We actually recommend you wait until the fall to aerate.
Colorado Grasses:
In Colorado we typically see cool season grasses such as Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, and Tall Fescue. These species of grass thrive in the spring and fall because the cooler temperatures create optimal growing conditions. Because the grass grows rapidly in these seasons the aeration boosts the grass’ ability to fill in the thin patches and bare spots. In the summer cool season grasses are under a high amount of stress and grow much more slowly.
An aeration is intended to loosen up the soil. Since the soil would likely begin to compact again before optimal growing conditions return the benefits would essentially be wasted. Aerating in the fall and seeding promotes growth in areas of the lawn that need some TLC. Aeration in the spring will promote root growth so that your lawn is strong enough to battle the summer sun and survive.
Someone who lives in a warmer climate likely grows Bermuda Grass. Summer is Bermuda Grass’ time to thrive. So this is when someone in this climate should aerate their lawn as long as there are no signs of heat or drought stress. Aerating Bermuda Grass in any other season would offer little benefit since this grass will be trying to conserve its resources
So what exactly is an aeration?
At Erbert Lawns we offer a liquid aeration service. The old school way was to use a core aerator that pulls up plugs of soil to break up compacted areas. This method was effective but it always leaves the plugs on the surface of the lawn that takes time to break down naturally. There is also a high risk of damaging your sprinkler head unless they are clearly marked.
Liquid aerations are far less invasive. The formula for liquid aeration is designed to open up soil, even hard packed clay, to allow air, water, and nutrients to work into the root system. It also promotes the roots to grow more deeply which makes your lawn tough against disease and pests. The formula also includes sea kelp and humic minerals that feed the ecosystem within the soil.
