Something that can put quite the damper on your beautiful lawn is this pesky species of grass we like to call crabgrass. A pre-emergent herbicide is the best way to combat this weed!
So what is crabgrass?
This kind of grass is called Digitaria. It is an annual plant that is considered a “pest” in your lawn and garden. This sneaky grass starts to germinate in the early spring and can produce up to 150,000 seeds in a single season, yikes! Under fertilized and thirsty lawns are more susceptible to becoming a victim to crabgrass. Crabgrass is not the cause of an unhealthy lawn, it is a symptom.
Why do people dislike crabgrass?
The grass that you like see on your lawn is a bit dainty compared to crabgrass which is strong and can thrive in harsh conditions. During the hottest days of summer when your grass is under high stress and needs the most care is the time when crabgrass grows lush and thick, but still appears unkempt. When the cold starts to hit, crabgrass will start to look more thinned out and patchy. Simply put, it just doesn’t look good! And if you are anything like me, laying out on the lawn during the summer is a tradition. Kentucky bluegrass, the most common type we have here in Colorado, is soft and comfy whereas the broad blades of crabgrass are rough.
How does pre-emergent herbicide help?
Don’t let the crabgrass seeds germinate! Here at Erbert Lawns, we offer a package that fertilizes and sprays for weeds in your lawn from the start of the season all the way to the end. Our lawn care specialists will come out seven times, once about every four to five weeks. In this package, we help keep crabgrass out of your lawn from the beginning of the season. We include a pre-emergent with the first application that does not allow any crabgrass seeds to germinate. However, be advised any grass seed that you put on your lawn will also not be able to germinate. Grass seed germination can take anywhere from 5 to 30 days. It is best to work on one battle at a time to create the lawn of your dreams.
